Questions
from readers of Janet's books
Questions from speakers or teachers
of Janet's concepts
These
are questions from readers of Janet's books or participants at workshops
- How do I know what stage
I am at?
- You can take a Personal
Power Profile, available on this web site, under books/profiles.
It will let you know where you see yourself on all six stages of
power.
- Is there somewhere I
can go to take a class on Real Power?
- Most of the people in
the Real Power Network teach classes on Real Power. If we know where
you live, we might be able to connect you with their schedules.
- Is there any relationship
between Real Power, Meyers Briggs Types, Enneagram Types, etc?
- Yes, there are correlation's
among all of these concepts. The main idea is this: As you grow
deeper in your understanding of yourself and others, you move into
the more mature aspects of all of these profiles, and into the higher
stages of power.
- Are you going to do an
update to the Real Power book?
- I'm in the process of
doing that now. The new book should be published in Fall 2002.
- Are you writing any other
books?
- Yes, but I'm not quite
ready to announce what they are at this point.
- My group doesn't have
much money. Do Janet or other speakers ever give any discounts or do
pro bono presentations?
- Yes, she does, when
she has a special affiliation with that group or can link the speech
up with another paying client in the area.
- What motivated you to
start Silent Witness?
- I was emotionally abused
as a child in my family and have had several abusive relationships,
both intimate ones and work relationships. The work I do with Silent
Witness is part of my healing.
- Do you have to go through
all stages sequentially?
- We have all six stages
within us and we move among them on a daily basis, back and forth.
But we all have a HOME stage where we spend most of our time and
energy. We can move our home stage back to any previous stage but
we can only move our home stage forward in the order the stages
are listed. You cannot skip over any stages, much as we might like
to.
- How do you work with
a boss who is in a lower stage?
- Find out, by reading
Real Power, what motivates your boss and provide enough of that
to satisfy him or her. It won't help to let your boss know that
you think you are at a stage beyond him/her. If it is intolerable
to work for the person, then find a new position with a boss who
is at your stage or beyond.
- Do I have to give up
all my stuff to move into the higher stages?
- No, but you will find
yourself gradually detaching from the need for stuff. It will be
a natural process and you won't feel diminished by the loss.
- How do the stages impact
my relationships or my marriage?
- We tend to gravitate
to people who are at similar stages to us as friends and partners.
Problems can arise in these relationships if one person in the relationship
grows into another stage and the other doesn't grow at all. The
relationship often deteriorates when one person grows in their home
stage two stages beyond the other. Counseling can help prevent this.
- Who are people we would
recognize in the stages?
- I am always hesitant
to name names, for two reasons. Sometimes these people are so elevated
in our estimation that we don't think we could ever attain these
stages, which is not true. And the other reason is that people usually
want me to name political figures and we have a tendency to assign
higher stages to the people of our own political persuasion. However,
I did mention some well known figures in Real Power who I think,
are at the higher stages of power. They include Mother Teresa, Gandhi,
Martin Luther King, Jr., Rose Parks, Nelson Mandala, and Bishop
Tutu.
- Can I be in all stages
in the same day?
- Yes, hypothetically.
You could have breakfast with a friend and be in one stage, have
a meeting with your boss and be in another stage, have lunch with
your employees and be in yet another stage by the nature of these
relationships. And then you could meet with someone you mentor and
be in another stage, and then go home to dinner with your family
and be in yet another stage. And way deep inside, you might be struggling
with some darkness that you have not embraced which would put you
in yet another stage. But all through the day, you still have a
HOME stage that you come back to, where you reside and where most
people would identify you.
- Can I outrun my crisis
of integrity?
- You can run but you
can't hide. You can only ignore it and go back to an earlier stage
in which you are more comfortable and don't have to deal with the
crisis of integrity. But don't worry, you'll get another chance
to face 'your crisis of integrity!
Questions
from speakers or those that use Real Power
for educational purposes
- Why do
you offer free of charge your materials for others to use?
- I offer these materials
free because I want to help others grow in the stages of power and
I think that by my being generous, people are more eager and willing
to use their creativity in working with me and with the Real Power
network.
- What
should I say on my materials to let others know that it is OK to use
the materials?
- Here is one example:
"Gratefully used by permission of Janet Hagberg"
- If you are using handouts
for a group presentation: "Additional copies may be made without
permission for distribution within YOUR ORGANIZATION NAME. Others
should see written permission from Janet Hagberg or WHOEVER PROVIDED
THE INFORMATION."
- How can the Real Power
Network help me and how can I help them?
- They can help you by
giving you support and ideas for how you can use the materials.
They can be mentors or colleagues. They can be spiritual companions.
You can help them in the same ways.
- What
do you do when someone says to you that they are a 6?
