About me and our work
My work is varied these days, from working with refugees, to teaching at a university, to helping people in the dying process, to connecting mainstream people with people on the margins, to working as a master mentor in the network.

Summary of myr personal mission, vision, value
Mission: I am an Anchorite which means I try to be a grounded non-anxious presence in the world.
Vision: I desire to be a healer in any/all circumstances
Values: I desire to live out my life as an amateur urban mystic, in love with and absorbed by God

  • I bring healing and reconciliation to my encounters, as a non-anxious presence in the world
  • I value being vulnerable and compassionate with friends, opening my heart to giving and receiving love freely
  • I surround myself with beauty, creativity and humor
  • I strive to live the simplest life possible, holding everything lightly and cultivating humor in the daily routines of life
  • I enjoy meaningful work as an undivided person while finding joy in the balance of fun, work and prayer

What are your current spiritual practices?
Mostly quieting things like walking, praying, journaling, and solitude but also connecting regularly with a few spiritual communities, doing spiritual direction, writing, quilting, art projects, walking the labyrinth, and having intimate conversations with friends. I try to be a calming spiritual influence. I'd like to think that baseball is a spiritual practice but I have a hard time reconciling that!

What service are you performing for charitable purposes?
I do some spiritual direction, work with refugees on quilting as a healing practice, volunteer for a variety of things at my inner city church, teach at a center for spiritual formation, and befriend twenty somethings in various ways. Service is part of my DNA.

What Real Power/Janet Hagberg means to you
The Real Power model and this wonderful network have been an important part of my life's work. People in the network have become my best colleagues and trusted friends. It is humbling and exciting to see how each person makes the model his/her own, to carry out a unique mission in the world. I am so grateful.

What is one of your favorite quotes from Real Power or Critical Journey?
From Real Power; True leadership begins with the willingness to become someone other than who the world wants you to be. From The Critical Journey: To be Christ like is to let God be as central in your life as Jesus chose to let God be in his life.

Why I joined the network
I was part of the birthing of this Network because Robin, LaRee and Anne wanted to have a way to support one another. They did all the work. It was truly a collaborative and creative birthing.

Why were you invited to become a master mentor
I was invited because I wanted to do everything the other candidates did to become certified and I needed the process as much as they did. I was buddies with LaRee Ewers and Delorese Ambrose.

Summary of what I did to become certified as a master mentor
I answered each of the questions listed in the competences and supplied examples from my writing, my inner spiritual life and my teaching as well as letters from colleagues to back up my explanations. I got a lot of support from my buddies along the way as well. For an Action Learning Project I made a book called Beauty as a Thin Place and designed twenty different examples of ways in which beauty in my life is a thin place. A thin place is a place in which the veil between this side and the other side is temporarily lifted and we get a glimpse of the eternal. This project turned out to be a form of autobiography for me.

Testimony from someone we mentored in Real Power
My experience of mentoring with Janet is no doubt unique because we had not met prior to the mentoring process. We had several phone calls at the beginning to get started and it wasn't until the very end of our contract that we actually met face to face. So our interaction was totally by e-mail, and we all know how easy it is to misinterpret emails. But it worked well. The process of writing allowed me to articulate my thoughts, answers and questions carefully rather than rambling on a good exercise for an extravert! I then received the benefit of he rinsight, wisdom and patience. Janet was clear that the agenda was mine and she was always sensitive to, and respectful of, my journey as she responded with compassion, affirmations, encouragement and probing questions that required further reflection. Janet was a spiritual companion who was able to hear my heart in a compassionate and non-judgmental way, encourage my reflection and celebrate my growth.

A good mentor touches another without leaving prints. The touch can be soft words, opening questions, silence or merely being who they are. Janet is a great mentor. It is a life-changing, life- affirming gift to be a mentee of Janet's since 1999. Her grace and compassionate service draw me to a path of service. Her daily living leads me to seek wholeness. Her wisdom informs me of my own. I am indebted. The joy is to pay the debt to others.
From LaRee Ewers.

How we are using your certification
I am using my certification to live my life more as thin place and to be available to mentor others who are interested in being certified as master mentors and also the work/life certification.

My mentoring approach and personality
My mentoring is organic and different for each person. I'd say my tendency is to be as deep and real as possible and to try to draw out the deeper reaches of the mentee's spirit. My personality is quirky at times, serious and humorous, caring and challenging, spiritual and open minded, self judging and mercy granting. I'm a paradox:-)

What an ideal mentee would be for me
For me, someone who is not afraid to embrace their inner "wall" and move towards freedom.

Anything else we should know about you?
You may know too much already:-)
