Background
Janet is an artist, mentor and healer. Her calling is to invite people into the inner spiritual life through her writing, art, poetry and the sharing of her own story. She carries out this calling with compassion, vulnerability and humor. In her writing and her life, Janet is a bridge; a caring connection between the sacred and secular, between people of differing religious traditions, and between people of different races and creeds.
Although much of her past teaching has been in university and corporate settings, she now lives a smaller and simpler life in which she is mostly interested in being an anchoress, a non-anxious presence in the world. She has a special affinity for people on the margins; women in prison, survivors of domestic violence, those who are dying, people who are homeless. Now and then she teaches listening skills to people working with the marginalized, mentors “twenty somethings” and others who appear in her life, helps people heal their estrangements, and serves as a spiritual director and a spiritual healer. Learn more about mentoring.
Janet has published books on topics as diverse as creativity, personal power, career renewal, spiritual development, domestic violence, the inner life and suffering. Her artistic life has taken on new forms in the last several years; sacred images in contemporary quilted form she calls icons. They all tell a story that the viewer may relate to in their own life. She also writes poetry and publishes a weekly blog.
Janet is the recipient of several awards including the Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award from the University of Minnesota. She has a BA, an MSW in Social Work, has all coursework completed for a Ph. D. and is a certified spiritual director. Her current interests include reading, baseball, quilting, walking and tango dancing. She lives in her nest on the banks of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis.
