Mentor/Coach Training
There are ways to become more proficient in teaching, coaching or mentoring in the Real Power model. Here's a summary of what the process involves.
The Real Power Mentor philosophy
We train leaders to develop other leaders, to provoke their thinking about what true leadership is (beyond stage three in Hagberg’s model), to provide a practical tool for developing people and charting a new vision for the future.
Why is necessary to have true leaders who lead from their souls, people who can operate from a place of inner power?
Because the future requires leaders who do not operate out of fear or ego gratification, who do not revert to traditional authoritarian styles when things get tough, who do not have to prove their worth by supplying the answer.
It takes individuals changing themselves and then acting differently wherever they are, treating people differently, asking different questions, questioning policies, working unceasingly on issues, seeing a vision and acting in everyone’s best interest. ... It means being alive, not being detached, being sensitive to self yet putting more energy into empowering others, working to serve, not living to work. It is a transformed individual who transforms others, and together they transform organizations and countries.
Nothing happens that is not thought of by someone and agreed upon by others. And the most profound ways of changing others is the personal touch.
Criteria for Real Power Teachers/Mentors
We ask that each person exhibit the following characteristics:
Is drawn to the Real Power model and chooses to apply it to their lives to the best of their ability.
Demonstrates skills in listening and asking challenging questions. Shows compassion for and empathy with others. Creates an atmosphere in which a participant is drawn into the message of Real Power.
Can demonstrate skills in presenting materials to an audience using visuals, stories and personal anecdotes.
Shows ability to be self-assessing either by participating with a real power mentor personally or, if qualified in the counseling or training field, then by showing in writing or speaking one’s self assessing capabilities.
Shows commitment to one’s own spirituality and an ongoing inner life.
Follows guidelines for the Real Power program and agrees to apply the program to new arenas with integrity, staying true to the content.
Commits to “pay forward” either monetarily or through mentoring, materials or programs.
Submits two letters of recommendation; one from a person acquainted with the Real Power network.
Commits to mentoring by a certified Real Power network member on work done with participants.
Specifically, the above skills and abilities are assessed personally and attested to by a Real Power certified master mentor using the following categories:
Knowledge of the RP Model
Understands the PPP (if a part of their workshops/seminars)
Interpersonal Skills
Personal Orientation to Real Power – Select two of the following with consultation with mentor
Commitment to Stage 4+
Commitment to Spirituality
Commitment to Transformation
Application of the Real Power or Critical Journey teachings
Composes a written answer to: how do you uniquely bring RP to your life and/or niche market?
Supports the answer with a post to the website including the applicant’s handouts / outlines / printed magazine or press articles, etc. used to build knowledge of soul leadership.
If you are interested in this process here is a sampling of a master mentor’s (highest level of competence) process of fulfilling the program. Coaches or mentors are asked to address the competences above. You can do this process on your own or if you want a mentor, contact one of the people listed in the mentor network on the site.
Competency Assessment Guidelines:
Each of the 10 competences has nine levels of achievement, with the “not yet sufficient” category representing the first three (1-3), “acceptable” level representing the second three (4-6), and “exceptional” representing the last three (7-9).
Markers of Proficient Competence
Exceptional (9,8,7)
Acceptable (6,5,4)
Not Yet Sufficient (3,2,1)
Knowledge of the RP Model; Skills
1. Knows the Model (Pat)
2. Understands the PPP (Janet)
3. Interpersonal Skills (Don)
Personal Orientation to Real Power
4. Commitment to Stage 4+ (Janae)
5. Commitment to spirituality (Janet, LeRee)
6. Commitment to RP Network (LaRee)
7. Commitment to Transformation (Delorese)
Application of the RP Model
8. Action Learning Project (Janae, Don)
9. Commitment to Mentoring (Donna)
10. Successful Mentoring (Delorese)
Each candidate needs to achieve level 5 in each competence (either in current or future proficiency), but each candidate can decide which of the skills/knowledge they most want to learn within the “acceptable” category.
· Each candidate needs to achieve the “exceptional” level in at least 3-4 competence areas and can choose which of these the candidate most wants to work on. (The reason for this expectation is that master mentors are going to be responsible at the next level of certification for all of the competence areas so we don’t think it would be helpful to our next level candidates if we totally neglect a few of the competence areas.)
· Each candidate needs to both validate their current and future level of proficiency with a wide variety of assessments and evaluations (i.e. use poetry that I’m currently writing to assess part of my knowledge and lived experience of the stages beyond stage three, answer the excellent questions in the assessment).

Evaluation Plan Instructions:
Determine Current Proficiency
- Look at the Ten Competence Areas and decide what your current level of achievement is for rating (1-9) on each of the competences.
- In the Current Proficiency Rating column on the next page, put the appropriate rating (1-9) in the RATING section for each of the competences.
- In the Current Proficiency Rating column on the next page, explain the rationale (why you rated yourself the way you did) for each of the competences.
- In the Current Proficiency Validation column on the next page, list your proof (examples what you’ve already done) for proving or validating your current rating in the VALIDATION section for each of the competences.
- Include or attach any appropriate “proof” (i.e. samples of work, endorsements) to the action plan.
Determine Future Proficiency
- Look at the ten competence areas and decide what your future level of achievement is for rating (1-9) on each of the competences, keeping the guidelines and our own needs in mind.
- In the Future Proficiency Rating column on the next page, put the appropriate rating (1-9) in the RATING section for each of the competences.
- In the Future Proficiency Rating column on the next page, explain the rationale (why you rated yourself the way you did) for each of the competences.
- In the Future Proficiency Assessment & Evaluation column on the next page, list your assessment and evaluation plan (action steps and who will be involved) for improving your current rating in the ASSESSMENT & EVALUATION section for each of the competences.
- Check your plans with the point person in the competence area so there is general agreement on what you are doing for future competence and also for evaluations. Each point person needs to get back to the master mentor within 5 days if possible to confirm their plan.
- Work with your master mentor buddy to help you with your plan as needed.
- Determine how you will compile your work for each competence (folder, notebook, binder).
- When you’ve achieved the new level of competence for one of the competencies, verify with the “competence owner” for final validation. Repeat this process for all of 10 of the competencies.
